The Need to Lead

“Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems.” – Brian Tracy

At Explore Discover Act we believe strongly in potential through the deepening of connection to self, others and the world around us, and in the positive difference that we are all able to make. It’s one of the reasons L.E.A.D. with Courage™ was from the beginning our signature program; a chance for participants to explore individual and shared leadership, and discover that each and every one of us, regardless of whether or not we wear a particular badge, have the ability to lead (if we choose to own that). Using our daily thoughts, words and actions to make a positive difference in our own and others lives is the how. The why, or our need to lead, is it’s the pathway (as individuals and groups) to ‘be the change we wish to see in the world’.

“Leadership is action, not position.” – Donald H. McGannon

Where we’ve been, where we are now, where we will go. So many questions, fears and complexities arise as individuals, families, communities and a global village while we interpret varied leadership messages, experiment with and process what this thing called leadership is all about, and consider the potential contribution and difference we can make in our own and others lives. Can I/we really do this? Am I/we ready? Isn’t this someone else’s responsibility? Does it really matter? What if I/we make mistakes? Why would I/we put myself out there? What do I/we do next? Should I/we wait till I’m older/more qualified/etc.? What do I/we really care about? Who is going to help me/us? How can we compassionately keep coming back to empowered thoughts, words and actions when we drift off?

“Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” – John C. Maxwell

For us, we keep coming back to these core beliefs, because we know for sure that Action Changes Things:

  • We believe in exploring the possibilities, discovering potential and acting authentically.

  • That our daily thoughts, words and actions matter.

  • That our journey will involve both successes and challenges, remembering that, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts” – Winston Churchill.

  • We are all capable of making a difference in our own and others lives.

  • We are all in this together!

“Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.” – Vince Lombardi
